About the Canadian Chamber Choir/Choeur de Chambre du Canada
CCC Vision
The dedicated, professional singers of the CCC are committed to excellence as choral artists and strive to build community as Canadian choral educators, advocates, and ambassadors.
CCC Mission
The CCC celebrates Canadian choral heritage (past, present, and future) and engages in a diverse musical narrative to strengthen the choral community and make meaningful connections with people across the country and around the world. Through performances, workshops, mentorships, recordings and collaborations with other artists, the CCC is dedicated to furthering the choral art.
Now in its twentieth season, the CCC is a national ensemble of professional choral artists who travel from coast to coast to coast to champion Canadian music and endeavor to build community through singing. Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Julia Davids, the choir convenes in a different region of Canada at least twice a year, performing and mentoring choral practitioners of all ages and stages.
While we have had to cancel our in-person projects during this pandemic, the CCC has worked hard to maintain our contact with the Canadian choral community. The CCC is still creating new works and offering innovative virtual learning opportunities, all with the goal to keep Canada singing.
The CCC is also committed to fostering an equity-centered organization, and is embracing new opportunities to expand its reach and to challenge what it really means to be Canada’s choir. Building on a multi-year professional development process for the choir, a considerable focus of this year has been deepening our understanding of Indigenous cultures and inclusion-based music-making practices, both through reading and consultation with numerous knowledge keepers, artists, and educators.

Board Member Position Description
Term
Board members are elected at the Annual General Meeting and shall serve for a term of two (2) years, with the potential to serve multiple terms.
Duties and Responsibilities
Board meetings are held approximately 8 times a year from September to June. In addition, an Annual General Meeting is held, usually in February. Generally, meetings are held virtually; although occasionally the CCC will have in-person meetings at the cost of the organization. Board meetings will be scheduled at a time mutually agreeable to the board and staff. Board members are expected to attend all meetings of the Board as well as relevant committee meetings.
Materials for Board meetings, including agendas, reports and financials are posted online in advance of each Board meeting. Board members are expected to read materials distributed prior to Board meetings as these reports will not be discussed in detail at meetings. Clarifying questions and/or comments are welcomed and encouraged. Members are expected to be prepared to participate knowledgeably in discussions and to vote.
Board presence during CCC projects is generally not required, however it is also very beneficial for board members to take the opportunity to observe the choir both in performance and in workshops. The board executive and staff will work to tie any in-person board gatherings to an existing CCC activity whenever possible.
The CCC requires that Board members are familiar and comply with the Duties and Responsibilities of the Board as set out in the Board’s By-Laws and policies, and have a working knowledge of the operations of the CCC. Board members will be conversant with and observe their fiduciary duties, as legally required of Directors of Canadian Not-for-Profit Corporations.
Orientation and Development
New Board members will be oriented by a current director of the Board prior to attending their first meeting. In addition, Board retreats and/or education sessions may be scheduled as necessary at the cost of the organization, either in person or virtually. Board members are expected to participate in active self-assessment, evaluation, and feedback.
Committee Work
With a relatively small staff, committees actively support the work of the organization. It is anticipated that each Board member will serve on at least one Board Committee, as determined in consultation with the Chair. Committees generally meet monthly or as required.
Working as a Team
Working collaboratively in a team is essential to the success of the CCC, as our strength comes from the variety of skill sets and expertise of our board. Board members need to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the Chair of the Board, other Directors, the artistic team and administrative staff. Board members embrace the spirit of consensus-building through robust dialogue and a commitment to our stakeholders.
Fundraising and Personal Giving
Board members will actively support all fundraising and development goals and activities of the CCC, consistent with the strategic directions approved by the Board. CCC Board members are expected to personally support the CCC through an annual financial contribution according to their individual means.
To Apply
To apply, please send your CV via email to Beth Peterkin, Chair of the Board, at [email protected] along with a letter of intent indicating the nature of your interest in the Board of the CCC. Prospective applicants will be interviewed and selected according to the needs of the organization. Deadline: March 22, 2021. Extended to March 31.
