Composed by Edward Enman and recorded live using Zoom videoconferencing software, a countdown clock and basic audio-visual equipment each singer already had on hand, it’s a collaboration in real time – and most definitely a sign of the times. September 17, 2020 – The Canadian Chamber Choir (CCC) wishes to congratulate Montréal-based composer and pianist Edward Enman as the winner of our 2020 Composition Competition: Responding to the Pandemic. The initiative, which launched on May 22 and concluded on September 1, encouraged Canadian composers to create works specifically for the digital realm; choral repertoire designed to utilize physical distancing and sound its very best when performed virtually by singers spread throughout Canada. After due consideration for the health and well-being of everyone involved, as well as current restrictions on large public gatherings, the Canadian Chamber Choir and its local presenters must regretfully announce the cancellation of our East Coast tour scheduled for March 20–29, 2020. Seasons of Life and Landscape explores Canada’s vast musical landscape and a variety of moods through music composed by established and emerging Canadian composers. The music evokes forces of nature across our four seasons as well as the lived human journey through the seasons of life. This follow-up to the CCC’s Juno-nominated 2015 release features special guests Jeff Reilly (bass clarinet), Keith Hamm (viola), and Beverley Johnston (vibraphone). As an organization, we are striving to learn from Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing, and to use our art to engage actively with the Truth and Reconciliation Committee’s Calls to Action.   In acknowledging (re)conciliation as action-based, the CCC has commissioned Yellowknife composer Carmen Braden to compose a multi-movement work about water from both non-Indigenous and Indigenous perspectives. The piece, entitled Where Waters Meet (WWM), includes texts by the composer, by the singers, and by Indigenous poet Yolanda Bonnell.
