The Canadian Chamber Choir is devastated to hear of the death of Dominic Gregorio, singer, music educator, and conductor. Dom was a friend and admired colleague to many of us in the CCC. We ‘grew up’ beside him in the National Youth Choir and other ensembles. He was one of the first singers in the CCC before going on to graduate studies and changing the lives of so many through his compassionate and inspired leadership.
Dom encountered struggles throughout his life, some physical and others that ran deeper. Despite anything he faced, he was profoundly giving of himself. Dom was a generous and collaborative colleague. I have memories of him attending the sessions I gave at conferences, mainly to support me (because that was the sort of colleague he was) and also because he was a tireless, life-long learner. I, in turn, learned so much from him, especially about how to endeavour to create an intentionally positive community within our choral ensembles. He also generously supported the CCC, writing an articulate review of our latest recording as one of his many contributions to the Anacrusis publication of Choral Canada. Despite his busy schedule, on the CCC’s 2018 tour of Saskatchewan, Dom found the time to host a singer and attend a concert the CCC gave in Regina at a retirement residence. The next day he baked us cookies for our continued journey…
Dom gave without measure to his friends and family, his students, his community and colleagues, and we’re so sorry that he is gone. We extend our condolences to his family and all those who will miss his warm smile and abundant, positive energy. We mourn alongside you.
